Do You Have Unsightly Spider Veins? We Can Help

Do you want to wear summer dresses, shorts, and sandals and enjoy the last of the summer sun but feel embarrassed by spider veins? At New Canaan Podiatry, we understand and want to help you enjoy the final days of summer—without feeling self-conscious about your skin!

Jennifer Tauber, DPM, and our podiatric team in New Canaan, Connecticut, can help you achieve the legs of your dreams by treating your spider veins. Thanks to advancements in medical technology, we offer noninvasive laser treatments to erase your spider veins.

Reasons spider veins develop

Spider veins are caused when the one-way valve that lets blood flow into a capillary either gets stuck or wears out. When the valve no longer works, blood pools in the vein.

This pooling blood causes them to be prominent through your skin as blue, red, or purple lines. Typically, they don't cause other symptoms—but they can cause embarrassment at the appearance of your skin!

You may be wondering why some people get spider veins, and others don't. Scientists are still researching this; certain factors are more related to spider vein development.

These factors include injury/trauma, sun exposure, hormonal birth control, pregnancy, and weight gain. Spider veins also tend to run in families.

The good news is that spider veins are more common than you think. Over half of the American adults have spider veins.

Until recently, the only way to get rid of spider veins was by using harsh chemical injections or covering them. But advancements in aesthetic technology have made noninvasive therapies effective.

Preventing spider veins before they start

While there’s currently no way to completely stop spider veins from forming, there are steps you can take to lower your risk, including:

Wearing supportive shoes rather than high heels can help to avoid developing spider veins on your feet, calves, and ankles. Discuss your concerns with Dr. Tauber for personalized advice to minimize your chances of developing spider veins.

How to make spider veins disappear

At New Canaan Podiatry, Dr. Tauber uses the noninvasive Fontana endovenous laser system to cause your spider veins to disappear. This treatment erases the smallest spider veins while protecting your surrounding tissues and skin.

The Fontana system uses long-pulse Nd: YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) energy, which heats the vein. The heat energy causes the vein walls to seal shut, effectively closing the vein as the walls collapse.

Over time, your body re-absorbs the treated veins and removes the dead cells and other cellular waste through your body's lymphatic system. Remember that you may need more than one treatment session, depending on how many spider veins you have.

Stop concealing your legs because of spider veins, and enjoy the feel of the late summer sun on your skin! Schedule an appointment online or over the phone for laser treatments with Dr. Tauber at New Canaan Podiatry.
